A common arrangement on small ROVs is Ethernet over one twisted pair of the tether, through a pair of tether interface boards, carrying video and telemetry together.
A subsea switch driving a switching board lets a diver or pilot power the vehicle up and down, or kill it, from outside. The switch carries the control current; the board carries the load.
