How to choose flight controllers

Autopilot or FPV controller

Pixhawk-standard autopilots are built for PX4 and ArduPilot missions: GPS navigation, telemetry, companion computers and CAN peripherals. FPV controllers are smaller and cheaper, built for manual flying first.

Module and baseboard

Some autopilots are a flight-controller module that plugs into a baseboard sold separately; the product page says so. A baseboard on its own does not fly anything.

Count the ports before the processor

List every peripheral (GPS, telemetry, RC receiver, companion computer, power module, CAN devices) and check the controller has a port and the right voltage for each.

Why are baseboards listed separately from flight controllers?

A baseboard only carries connectors and power for a flight-controller module; it cannot fly anything by itself. They are listed here so you can order the pair, and the starting price for this page counts flight controllers only.
