How to choose thrusters and motors
Work out the thrust first
Estimate the drag at your target speed, add a margin for current, tether and ageing, and divide it between the thrusters that push in that direction. The thruster sizing guide works through the sums.
Compare thrust at the same voltage
Thrust is quoted at a stated supply voltage, and the figures on these cards carry it. A figure measured at 24 V does not apply to the same thruster on a 12 V pack.
Built-in or external speed controller
A thruster with its controller built in needs only power and a signal wire. One without needs an ESC in a dry housing, with its three motor wires brought through a penetrator.
The cable entry has its own rating
A thruster's depth rating covers the thruster. The penetrator or connector its cable passes through, and the housing it enters, have ratings of their own.

Questions buyers ask
Which of these thrusters need a separate speed controller?
Blu-Sub's Z60 and Z80 thrusters without an E in the name, and Blue Robotics' T200, need an external ESC. The Z60E, Z80E-170 and Z80E-290 have one built in. Each product page states which it is.
Are the thrust figures comparable between brands?
Only at the same voltage and with the same guard or nozzle fitted. Each figure on these pages is quoted with the voltage and conditions the manufacturer gives; where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we do not print one.
